LEWISTON—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will hold a family safety fair on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Niagara Power Vista, the admission-free visitors’ center at NYPA’s Niagara Power Project, 5777 Lewiston Road, Lewiston, N.Y.

Bring your Legos and enter the “Build Up to Safety” contest. Use your imagination to construct a simple or elaborate safety-related object, like a fire truck, construction site, patrol boat or medical helicopter. An Ideal Builders Lego Club member will judge all entries, with winners announced at 3 p.m. The first-place winner will receive a 24-inch bicycle, with safety-related prizes for second and third place.

The first 350 children will receive a free anti-bullying wrist band.

Representatives from the New York Masonic Safety ID Program will provide parents, guardians, seniors and college students with free Safety ID packets, including a personalized compact disc with a digital photograph, fingerprints and other vital information that law enforcement can use in the search for a missing loved one.

Several law enforcement departments will be in attendance as well:

• New York State Police will operate a distracted driving simulator;
• Lewiston Police and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Department will conduct child car seat safety checks;
• The Niagara Falls Fire Department will discuss fire safety;
• The New York State Parks Police, Niagara Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Niagara University Border Community Service will also be on hand.

Visitors can enjoy more than 50 displays and interactive exhibits on electricity, energy efficiency and area history and spectacular views from an observation deck 350 feet above the Niagara River gorge.

NYPA and the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will also provide free trolley service between the Power Vista and the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center in Niagara Falls.

Admission and parking at the Power Vista is always free. For more information call 716-286-6661 or e-mail npvista [at] nypa [dot] gov.

NYPA AWARDED FOR SUPERIOR CONCRETE WORK ON DAM FACE

May 29, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wilson resident Marek Kobialka, a construction engineer with the Niagara Power Project, recently received, on behalf of the New York Power Authority (NYPA), an award from the Western New York Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI-WNY) for superior work practices related to the repair and restoration of the dam face of the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant (featured in the background). The Moses plant is the Niagara Project’s main generating facility.

NYPA and its partners, including Crane Hogan Structural Systems, BVR Construction, LaFarge North America and Applus RTD, were recognized for the quality of repair work over a 21,000-square-foot area of the dam face and the innovative practices for conducting the work in 2013 and early 2014. The Structural Concrete Repair Award was announced at the annual ACI-WNY banquet in Batavia on May 9.

About NYPA:
The New York Power Authority uses no tax money or state credit. It finances its operations through the sale of bonds and revenues earned in large part through sales of electricity. ■ NYPA has been designated as the lead entity via Executive Order 88 by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to form a central management and implementation plan to carry out his Build Smart NY plan to reduce energy use by state facilities 20 percent by 2020. ■ NYPA is the nation’s largest state public power organization, through the operation of its 16 generating facilities in various parts of New York State, participation in a unique public/private partnership to contract for power from a clean generating plant in Queens, and its operation of more than 1,400 circuit-miles of transmission lines. ■ More than 70 percent of the electricity NYPA produces is clean renewable hydropower. Its lower-cost power production and electricity purchases support hundreds of thousands of jobs throughout the state.■ For more information visit www.nypa.gov or follow us on Twitter @NYPAenergy, Facebook, Instagram, WordPress, and LinkedIn.
