Tops Markets LLC is planning an expansion of a former Big M supermarket it acquired in Watertown.
The Amherst-based supermarket chain has agreed to lease 8,100 square feet of a onetime Kinney Drugs store in the Watertown Plaza and expand its existing grocery store into the former pharmacy. The expansion work is slated to take place this summer and be completed by November.
The expansion is part of an overall program underway by Tops to upgrade and renovate most of its 155 stores. Tops acquired four Big M markets last year.
The Tops store will remain open during the expansion.
Besides the Watertown Big M, Tops also bought the chain’s stores in Adams, Sandy Creek and Boonville — all of which are being renovated.
